The Ultimate Travel Guide to Visiting AlUla, Saudi Arabia
AlUla is one of Saudi Arabiaβs most remarkable destinations, located in the northwest of the country within the Medina region. Known for its dramatic desert landscapes and archaeological significance, it is home to Hegra, Saudi Arabiaβs first UNESCO World Heritage Site, as well as ancient rock tombs, historic dwellings, and striking sandstone formations. In recent years, AlUla has opened up to international tourism with new infrastructure, seasonal events, and luxury accommodations, making it an ideal destination for travellers interested in history, culture, and nature.
This guide covers everything you need to know before visitingβfrom when to go and how to get there, to what to see, do, and experience in this extraordinary part of the Arabian Peninsula.
When to Go & How to Get There
The best time to visit AlUla is from October to March, when the weather is cooler and ideal for exploring outdoor sites like Maraya and the rock formations of the desert. This season also hosts AlUla Moments, a programme of cultural events, concerts, and festivals. AlUla is accessible via AlUla International Airport (ULH), with direct flights from Riyadh, Jeddah, Dammam, and seasonal routes from Dubai and Doha. The airport is about 30 minutes from the main sites, with options for car hire, private transfers, or guided tours. We hired a car, which gave us the freedom to explore the entire area at our own pace.

WHAT TO SEE
Hegra
Hegra (Madain Salih) is Saudi Arabiaβs first UNESCO World Heritage Site, featuring over 100 well-preserved Nabataean tombs carved into sandstone cliffs dating back to the 1st century BCE. We experienced Hegra After Darkβan immersive horse-and-cart tour, where actors brought the ancient city to life by portraying daily life from that era. The tour also included hands-on activities like making traditional bracelets and sampling local delicacies, adding a unique cultural dimension to the visit. The site has well-maintained walking trails and an informative visitor centre, making it accessible and engaging for all visitors.
Elephant Rock
Elephant Rock (Jabal AlFil) is a natural sandstone formation shaped like an elephant, standing about 52 meters high and located a short drive from AlUla town. Itβs a popular spot for sunset visits and photography. On site, food cartsβincluding the popular Salt burger truckβoffer refreshments, making it convenient to spend time relaxing after exploring. The area includes parking and easy walking paths around the formation, with no entrance fee.
Maraya
Maraya is a contemporary event and performance venue known for its striking mirrored exterior, which reflects the surrounding desert and mountains. It is the worldβs largest mirrored building and hosts concerts, art exhibitions, and conferences, especially during AlUla Moments. The interior includes a large auditorium and flexible event spaces, while the exteriorβs reflective surfaces create a unique architectural landmark. I guarantee youβll spend a few minutes here perfecting your selfie game.
Harrat Viewpoint
Harrat Viewpoint provides sweeping views of the volcanic lava fields and the AlUla valley below. The winding road to the top is rather sketchy, with tight turns up the mountain, and not recommended for the faint-hearted. Once at the viewpoint, visitors can enjoy dramatic photo opportunities and dine at the OKTO restaurant. Itβs the perfect place to unwind, in comfy sunken seating, while watching the sunset over the surrounding mountains.
Old Town AlUla
Old Town AlUla is a historic village featuring mud brick houses and narrow alleyways that date back several centuries. It once served as a trading hub and has recently undergone preservation efforts to maintain its cultural significance. Visitors can wander the restored streets, visit small museums and workshops, and learn about traditional architecture and local heritage. Guided tours are recommended to fully appreciate the history and stories of the area.
