There is a specific kind of magic found in Hiriketiya that is becoming increasingly rare along Sri Lanka’s southern coastline. Often referred to simply as "Hiri," this perfectly formed horseshoe bay feels like a secret the jungle is trying its best to keep. While other coastal towns have expanded into bustling hubs, Hiriketiya remains a place where the roads are still mostly dirt, the palms lean impossibly low over the water, and the rhythm of the day is dictated entirely by the swell.
The bay itself is a natural amphitheatre. Because of its unique shape, it manages to cater to every level of surfer simultaneously. At the shore, the mellow, sandy-bottomed waves are a playground for beginners and those learning to surf for the first time. Further out, a fast left-hand point break provides a more serious challenge for those who know exactly what they are doing. It is a rare spot where the lineup feels inclusive rather than competitive, a shared appreciation for a bay that delivers year-round.
Walking through the village, the air is thick with the scent of wood-fired pizzas and tropical greenery. Boutique stays and cafés are tucked so deeply into the foliage that they almost disappear. Life revolves around the walk between the surf and the shade. You might spend a morning at Mond, sipping a flat white on a rooftop that overlooks the entire bay, before heading down for a sunset swim with the resident sea turtles that frequent the shallows.

Accommodation in Hiriketiya has evolved beautifully, moving away from standard guest houses toward considered, design-led spaces. Beldon Boutique Hotel is a standout, offering a polished sanctuary just a few minutes’ walk from the sand, while spots like Salt House have become institutions for those looking to combine a stay with world-class yoga. The architecture in the village tends to embrace the "outside-in" philosophy, with open-air showers, private plunge pools, and plenty of concrete and timber textures that feel grounded in the landscape.
Dine
The food scene is unexpectedly sophisticated for such a small enclave. Smoke & Bitters has gained international acclaim—and a spot on Asia’s 50 Best Bars list—for its smoked meats and cocktails that use local ingredients like Ceylon tea and wild honey. For something more casual, La Playa is the place to be, offering a classic coastal menu and a front-row seat to the surf. Alternatively, Bacuzzi is widely considered to serve the best pizza on the island. As night falls, the energy shifts toward Dots Bay House, where live music and communal tables create a sense of community that makes it impossible to remain a stranger for long.
Explore
While it is tempting to never leave the horseshoe, the surrounding area offers a different kind of quiet. A ten-minute stroll over the hill leads you to Dickwella Beach, a vast, sweeping stretch of golden sand that is often completely empty. It provides a stark, peaceful contrast to the high-energy surf vibe of Hiri. Further afield, the Wewurukannala Vihara Temple houses one of the island's most impressive Buddha statues, offering a moment of cultural reflection amidst the tropical heat.
Despite its growing popularity, Hiriketiya has managed to retain the intimacy that made travellers fall in love with it in the first place. It remains wonderfully unpolished, where surfboards outnumber cars and life moves entirely to the rhythm of the ocean.
