Walking out onto the cobbled streets of Rome one September morning, it felt like everything was within reach. The river’s gentle hum, historic façades dripping with stories, and the promise of gelato round the corner set the scene perfectly. For the ideal base, I stayed at the citizenM Rome Isola Tiberina, part of the wider citizenM family now under Marriott Bonvoy. The hotel retains its distinctive for the people ethos while offering the reliability, reach, and loyalty benefits of one of the world’s largest hotel networks.
citizenM launches itself as affordable luxury for the modern traveller — sleek design, generous beds, power-showers, tech at your fingertips, and urban locations. The brand now spans dozens of cities: Amsterdam, London, New York, Paris, Los Angeles and beyond. In Rome, this is not just another chain-hotel: it brings the trademark citizenM look and feel into the heart of the Eternal City.
And what a location. Perched on the Lungotevere de’ Cenci in the historic Jewish Ghetto, right by the River Tiber, you are within walking distance to sites you’ve always dreamed of — the Pantheon, the Colosseum, the Trevi Fountain and even the Vatican City.
Checking In
From the moment we stepped in, check-in was refreshingly effortless. citizenM uses a self-service kiosk and tablet system — you tap, sign, collect your key card, and head straight to your room. Once you’ve stayed at one citizenM, the system remembers you for future visits, so the process gets even quicker. The front-of-house ambassadors are on hand 24/7, but it doesn’t feel like a formal reception — more like checking into a stylish apartment.
At Rome Isola Tiberina, check-in starts from 14:00, with luggage storage available if you arrive early, and check-out at 11:00 unless you’ve added late check-out. The key thing: no hidden hassles, just a smart, seamless start to your stay. For a traveller eager to hit the streets of Rome, that’s speed and simplicity sorted before you’ve even unpacked.
The Rooms
We booked one of the river-facing rooms and wow — the view overlooking the Tiber and the city’s rooftops was a beautiful way to wake up. The rooms at citizenM are thoughtfully compact (it is Rome after all), but they feel deceptively spacious thanks to clever design: full width windows, wall-to-wall king XL beds, and smart layout. Each room averages around 20 m² and features sound-proofed windows – we couldn’t hear a thing from the street below and slept like babies.
The amenities are a tech-lover’s dream: a bedside iPad lets you control the lights, curtains, blackout blinds, mood lighting, TV streaming and climate control, all from the comfort of your bed. No fiddling with switches, no complicated menus. The smart TV has Chromecast and free high-speed WiFi (great for streaming your favourite series after a long day). The bathroom is generous for the size of the room — massive shower with rain-head, luxury toiletries, big fluffy towels.
Despite the modest footprint (which is typical for city-centre hotels in Rome), there was ample space for our suitcases and belongings without feeling cluttered. The bed? One of the most comfortable I’ve slept in — huge, inviting, with crisp cotton sheets. The windows? Large enough that the view becomes part of the room experience. It truly felt like a restful sanctuary amid the buzz of the city.
Hang-out Spaces
The communal areas at citizenM Rome are where the hotel really shines as more than just a place to sleep. The ground floor (Living Room) replaces the typical hotel lobby: designer furniture, bookshelves, art walls, quirky nooks. Perfect for kicking back, reading, working, meeting friends or simply decompressing with a coffee. The bar area (canteenM) is open 24/7 — you can grab a snack, espresso, drink whenever you like.
Then there’s the rooftop terrace — one of the best parts of the hotel. With wide views over Rome’s rooftops, it’s the perfect spot for an Aperol Spritz at sunset. Drinks are self-serve, so you simply tap your room key and pour a beer, wine or spritz — no waiting at the bar. We spent an evening up there watching the sun set over the city and playing multiple games of UNO. The atmosphere was relaxed and stylish, the ideal way to end the day.
Likewise, if you needed to work for a bit, the WiFi, communal seating and plug-points make this hotel co-work friendly too. Whether you’re in town for leisure or mixing in a few work bits, it fits both.
Why It’s the Perfect Base, and Budget-Friendly
In Rome, location and comfort often come at a premium. What made citizenM Rome stand out for me was how it balanced excellent location, modern comfort, and value. Being a minute stroll to the Tiber, ten-minutes to the Trevi Fountain, fifteen-minutes to the Colosseum — yet returning to a bed that felt luxurious and tech-savvy — is a rare find. The hotel’s ethos of accessible luxury means you get designer furnishings, smart amenities and a full-service vibe, but without the ultra-price tag of the grand historic palace hotels.
I can confidently say, if you want a base in Rome that lets you walk everywhere, relax in comfort, enjoy communal spaces and a rooftop terrace where the city feels yours for a moment — this is it. Whether you’re on a city-break, a romantic few days, or a work-leisure combo, citizenM Rome hits the sweet spot.
If I were to give one piece of advice: book early to snag a river-view room (worth it), and unwind on that rooftop terrace at golden hour — you’ll remember that view.
In short: stay at citizenM Rome Isola Tiberina, unpack once, walk everywhere, sleep deeply, sip spritzes above the city, and use the hotel as the launchpad for all things Roman. You’ll love it.
